Eighty-two
years is a long time. We have come a long way and that is nothing
to sneeze at. Over decades hundreds of singing men have joined
this club singing their hearts out entertaining audiences with
a variety of music: sea chants, spirituals, folk songs, doo-wop,
pop tunes, traditional glee club music, the whole gamut.
I joined this group under the capable leadership of the late
Dr. George Meade. I was introduced to the club by our treasurer
Mr. Robert DiLello. To coin a phrase, “I came, I liked,
and I stayed.” At a recent rehearsal, while addressing
the group, I mentioned that I started to sing at a very early
age. Matter of fact, I was the youngest member in my church’s
senior choir. My reason for mentioning this fact was to impress
on some prospective singers that it was not necessarily a requirement
to be a trained singer. One only has to love singing, be able
to carry a tune and have an ear to appreciate music.
Some singers joined us for a time but left indicating they were
overwhelmed by the type of music we sing or the time element,
etc. But we are all beginners who have gotten together with
others and are helped along the way. After so many years, it
has become second nature and a thing of joy.
To you our audience please be assured that we work to put our
voices together week after week to bring you this music—and
it has been a joyful process. If a tree falls in the forest
does it make a sound? The answer is a resounding yes. If you
are present you will hear the beautiful music (not that we are
falling trees mind you) but we make joyful, harmonious noise,
and your presence is an inspiration. Thank you for coming, and
please tell your friends about us. We also extend our thanks
tonight to our associates, emeritus members and contributors
to our journal which helps us to defray expenses.
This concert is in memoriam for one of our faithful singers,
who was a member for quite a long time. Mr. John Watson passed
in June. He loved singing with us and we miss his voice. We
share this loss with his three children John Jr., Rodney and
Julie, his granddaughter Jennifer, and other relatives and friends.

President
